Why do I get breast pain while feeding?

Q: My wife is breast feeding our 9-month-old baby. For the past few days, she gets pain only on nipple part of her right breast, whenever she feeds or when she pinches it. She doesn't get any pain on touching. She has self-examined them and found no lumps in her breasts. We are thinking that maybe the baby sucks too hard or pinches them also, which leads to the pain. Is it related to breast cancer?

A:This is not related to cancer. It is because the baby at nine months has started the process of teething. Please apply jelly/vaseline/ contact your doctor for any of the various medicated creams specifically marketed for this purpose. Actually even petroleum jelly is often good enough. Continue breast feeding as it is very important for the baby.
