Why are my sugar levels fluctuating everyday?

Q: I am a 27-year-old diabetic, not sure that I am Type-I or Type-II. A year back I came to know that I am diabetic. The doctor advised me Human Mixtard 30-70 (12 units AM and 8 units PM). My daily sugar level keeps varying from 300-340 before dinner and sometimes 138-158 before dinner and usually followed by stomach upset and uneasy feeling in evening. What should I do to overcome this problem? Should I go for Insulin when the sugar level is as low as 138? Are there some tests to know about the type of diabetes?

A:Your blood sugar is fluctuating probably because you are stopping the insulin when blood sugar is normal. Insulin is still required even when blood sugar is normal. The morning blood sugar value reflects insulin taken at night while the evening blood sugar reflects insulin effect of morning dose. Get your blood sugar controlled well and only later on an effort can be made to check internal insulin production after stopping insulin injection. There are other expensive tests which can be done but they are not very specific either. So for the time being concentrate on good blood sugar control.
