Which is the best Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) to manage acidity?

Q: I am on a proton pump inhibitor from the last two weeks. Off and on, I have to take one as I suffer from acidity as per my doctor. I am myself from pharmacy background. Now as the market is flooded by a number of options in PPIs, please let me know, which one of the PPI is the best to take?

A:You have not mentioned the name of the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) that you are taking. Even though there are many PPIs available in the market, the efficacy is not very much different. It is always preferable to take old, tried and tested medicines unless there is a remarkable difference in efficacy. Omeprazole (e.g. Ocid-20), one capsule daily for up to 28 days is a good choice. If there is inadequate improvement, you should go in for endoscopy and tests for H. pylori infection.
