What tests are required before a kidney transplant?
Q: A friend of mine of Nigerian origin needs a kidney transplant. Her real brother is ready to donate one of his kidney for her. They want the transplant to be done in India. Kindly tell us what tests are required for it?
A:Evaluation for kidney transplant is an exhaustive process and requires evaluation of both donor and recipient. Recipients evaluation include cardiac testing, testing for any infections as tuberculosis or HIV, psychological evaluation, testing for cancers and lots of other blood tests. Second part includes making sure the prospective donor is disease free especially diabetes, hypertension or other kidney disease. Finally, blood type matching to ensure the recipients body does not reject donors kidney. I suggest you see a nephrologist with experience in transplantation for this matter.
