What test should be done to diagnose pregnancy?

Q: I have a usually have a regular cycle of 30 days. But last month the period started 1 week earlier, which was an exception. This month it is late by 4 days. I got the hCG level done after 4 days of missed period and it came -ve. But I am having white vaginal discharge and feel fatigued. My body temperature is between 98.7 to 99 degree F where as it normally is between 97.6 to 98.4. I can feel breast tenderness and occasional mild cramps. I am not sure if I am pregnant or not?

A:You should be advised to wait for a further period of seven (7) days. Should you still not resume your periods, you may well repeat another urine pregnancy test or get a transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) done to confirm whether you are pregnant or not. TVS will not only accurately diagnose the presence or absence of pregnancy, but also confirm whether it is intrauterine or extrauterine (ectopic). The rise in temperature and white discharge appears to be coincidental but the symptom of breast tenderness, mild cramps and fatigue may be seen both in premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and early pregnancy.
