What does calcification of placenta mean?

Q: I am 33 weeks pregnant and I had a level 2 sonogram (ultrasound) done and it was noticed that my placenta has an increased amount of calcium in it. My calcium intake has dramatically increased due to my body craving for it for some reason. What is the real risk for this increased vitamin in my placenta? Can it cause fetal distress or pre-term delivery?

A:Increased calcification in the placenta is not related to your Calcium intake, but could suggest placental maturation / ageing and that means with passage of time this placenta may not be able to give enough nutrition to the fetus.
