What causes astigmatism?

Q: My four years old daughter is detected with cylindrical power in both eyes (right 1.5 at axis 180 and left 2.5 at axis 180). She also has myopia - 0.75 in both eyes. She is not using glasses as of now. We are not sure how astigmatism developed. The doctor told us that it is not caused due to irregular shape of cornea. What causes astigmatism?

A:Astigmatism has occurred since birth, and is not acquired. It is genetically determined. Not caused by TV. Get the K readings and store it, and follow it up with annual checkups. The child has to wear the glasses all the time, from morning till she sleeps. This is a must, and cannot be avoided. However please rest assured that this is not a disease.
