What care is required after surgery for congenital cataract?
Q: My 3 months old daughter was operated for congenital cataract. A bilateral lens aspiration was done. She is advised +23 D spectacles. What is the correct procedure to use these spectacles since the baby sleeps most of the time? How much time will it take to correct her vision?
A:The best way to correct this error would be to wear permanent-wear contact lenses which needs to be changed weekly or monthly. We in England use it for upto 3 months at a time and has to be replaced by a professionaly which may even require general anaesthesia for careful examination of the eyes as well, every time. Not giving enough visual stimulation at this age may make the eye lazy for rest of the child's life.
