What are the side effects of Oxetol and Lonazep?

Q: I am a 42 years old man taking Oxetol 300 mg with Lonazep 0.5 for the last 5 years. I can't live without taking even a single dose of these medicines. I feel I am deteriorating. Please suggest.

A:Oxetol contains oxcarbamazepine, which is actually meant for the treatment of epilepsy (fits) though it has some anti-depressant properties also. Lonazep contains clonazepam, another drug, which is actually meant for the treatment of epilepsy but has some anti-depressant properties also. Both these medicines lead to addiction and dependence with the result that the patient continues to take them even when it is not clinically required. Thus a patient of depression becomes a patient of drug addiction. Ultimately, side effects start appearing and the patient has to take additional drugs to combat side effects leading to a vicious circle. The side effects of Oxetol are: Fatigue, asthenia, CNS & gastro-intestinal disturbances, hyponatraemia (low salt levels in blood), dizziness, agitation, amnesia, impaired concentration, confusion, depression, apathy, ataxia, tremor, abnormal gait, rash, acne, serious skin reactions, toxic epidermal necrolysis (extremely serious), Stevens - Johnson syndrome (potentially dangerous), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count that can lead to bleeding). Hepatitis, loss of hair, multi-organ hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions, diplopia (double vision), nystagmus, blurred vision. Suicidal ideation or behaviour. Rarely, anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling) involving the larynx, glottis, lips and eyelids. The side effects of Lonazep are: CNS disturbances including impaired alertness, depression, ataxia, respiratory depression, amnesia, tolerance, behaviour problems, somnolence, fatigue, dizziness, light headedness, confusion, muscle weakness, vertigo. Liver disorder, blood dyscrasias. Dependence (addiction) etc. You can gradually reduce the dose over 2-3 weeks with a view to stop therapy and concurrently use non-drug methods such as Yoga.
