What are the precautions required after a fistula surgery?
Q: I have been advised surgery for a fistula problem. How many days rest is required after the operation before I rejoin office and when can I lead a normal life? Kindly let me know the dos and don'ts after the surgery. If once the operation is done, will the fistula recur?
A:After fistula surgery you may resume work usually within a week. You will have a problem sitting for a long time. This problem will remain for about a month. Do: Keep the wound clean. After passing stool, wash thoroughly with a stream of water. Don't: There are no specific don'ts. Recurrence rates are about 10%. Careful dressings will decrease this risk, but will not obviate it.
