What are the causes for placenta abruptio?

Q: I recently gave birth to a boy through a caesarean. It was an emergency c-section, due to abruptio of the placenta. I was in extreme pain the whole day and after going to the hospital for a check up, the doctors told me that ultrasound was fine, until they gave me a c-section. An hour later something popped and I was bleeding badly. How does a placenta abruptio happen? I was 38 weeks pregnant and the baby was still breech. Does it have anything to do with what the doctor did in hospital? How long should I wait to get pregnant again?

A:Placenta abruptio occurs in women in the higher age group (30+) with a history of high blood pressure. It may also happen due to a fall or jerk during pregnancy. There are several other causes but you will appreciate that it is not possible to list them all here. The obstetrician was correct in doing the C-section.
