What are my chances of conception?

Q: I am a 29 years old married woman and I am planning to conceive for the last 10 months. But after trying for 7 months, I consulted the doctor. She asked me to get some tests done - Mantoux, blood, etc. All the tests were normal. Then she asked me to get an ultrasound. In the ultrasound report uterine fibroids and cysts in both the ovaries were found. I am taking Letroz. Now I have to go for HCG. What are my chances of conception?

A:You need to tell me the number, size and location of the fibroids. In case it is small/ large but not located near the tubes, the pregnancy can still occur, with minimal problems during pregnancy like a red degeneration in some few cases which is easily treated with antibiotics and pain killers if it occurs. You can take some time to plan the pregnancy. If however, there are many big fibroids and are making the menses, heavy, or irregular and also causing pain abdomen, then surgery to remove the fibroids will need to be done before planning pregnancy by an operation called myomectomy. The chances of pregnancy improve a lot more after that. In some cases, a caesarean delivery may be needed once the pregnancy after the myomectomy goes to term.
