Thalassemia
Q: I would like to know about beta thalessemia? If the woman is a carrier what are the implications? Will the child born to her be at risk?
A:Thalassemia is an inherited disorder in which there is defective production of red blood cells. If the woman is a carrier, it is possible that her child may also be a carrier. It is also possible that the child does not inherit the genes reponsible for the trait and may be normal. Whether the father is also a carrier or does not carry the trait is not mentioned. What the child inherits is also dependent on the fathers genes. Prenatal tests can determine the childs status. She should contact a haematologist or a hospital and get more information regarding this.
