Pregnancy - calcium intake
Q: I am 32 weeks pregnant and I want to know whether taking too much calcium is harmful in any way. I am taking calcium tablet of 500mg per day and also 2 glasses of orange juice, 2 glasses of milk, 1 cup of yogurt everyday.
A:Calcium requirement of a pregnant woman is 1 g/day (1000 mg/day). The total of all the sources which you have mentioned is little more than this figure (your calcium intake is approximately 1200 mg/day). Calcium overload can cause potential health hazards with its consumption as high as 2,500 mg/day. Calcium is an important nutrient for the healthy growth of your babys bones hence meeting its requirement is very important. You can carry on with your dietary regime without any worry.
