Is vaginal bleeding normal in newborn girls?

Q: My 17 days old baby girl has passed 2-3 drops of blood 2-3 times. I am not sure whether it was from her vagina or with the stools. What could be the reason? I have been told that vaginal bleeding in female babies is normal. Is it correct?

A:Female babies may pass blood stained or bloody secretions during first few days after birth, sometimes even up to couple of weeks. This is normal. However, if it persists you should consult your paediatrician.
