Is transplantation possible across blood groups?

Q: I am a 54 years old diabetic woman having a creatinine level of 1.9 mg/dl. I have high blood pressure too. Recently I came to know that a B+ person can receive kidney from B-, O+ and O- donors apart from B+. Is it true? When will I need transplant/dialysis?

A:Yes, it is correct. The blood groups that you have mentioned are compatible. Some advanced transplant centres do across blood groups also but that needs special treatment and costs more. No one knows how the disease will progress and how long it will take. It will depend on the care with which the doctor looks after the patient attending to every detail. Nothing is predictable strictly in Biology and Medicine.
