Is surgery the only way to close a macular hole in the retina?
Q: I am a 68 years old female, have been diagnosed with a macular hole of 640 microns in the retina. The doctor said that surgery is the only treatment option for this. Is it advisable to for surgery at this stage?
A:The prognosis of macular hole closure and usual status after surgery depends upon the duration, size and preoperative vision. The retina specialist will evaluate all these factors before advising surgery. There are 5-10% chances if other eye developing a macular hole and regular follow up is advisable.
