Is stroke common after a bypass surgery?

Q: My father in law had a quadruple bypass and then had a severe stroke. The right side of his brain is swollen and the doctors are saying that his motor skills are affected. There are only 20% chances of recovery. Kindly tell me about these instances that occur during bypass surgery.

A:A brain stroke is a possibility after bypass. This happens secondary to carotid artery disease, the same atherosclerosis which was responsible for his heart problem. It is unfortunate to happen at the time of the bypass as it could have happened otherwise also. He needs to be treated by the local neurologist and after recovery he can be in touch with us to prevent further recurrences.
