Is patching suitable for treating amblyopia?
Q: My 7 years old daughter is having amblyopia in her left eye with a power of –11. Her right eye is normal. Will lasik surgery help her? She developed squint in her left eye 11 months back. The doctor suggested patching of the good eye and advised laser treatment when she is 18 years old. Will her eye recover by patching and how long will it take?
A:For amblyopia, patching is the best treatment possible and should have good results if done diligently. Your daughter also needs regular follow-ups with an eye specialist to monitor the response to treatment, which can take a minimum of few months. The decision for LASIK surgery can only be taken after she reaches 18 years of age and will depend on various factors.
