Is LASIK surgery safe for Indians?
Q: Is it true that the Indian cornea being thin when compared to the western ones, is not particularly suitable for LASIK surgery? There are apprehensions that chances of corneal damage due to the thin cornea are more in Indians.
A:It is not proven that Indian Corneas are thinner in general. However, world wide, corneas of high myopia are generally thinner. The safety of a LASIK procedure on account of corneal thickness is a very individualised concern and applies to each person independently. The LASIK surgeon has to verify the corneal thickness of the particular patient with specific relation to the power to be treated and zone diameter to assess the safety of the treatment.
