Is it safe to take progesterone capsules during pregnancy?
Q: I am a 33 years old female into my fifth week of pregnancy. I am experiencing some abdominal pain. Is it normal? To add, one year back, I had to get an abortion done, as the fetus did not have any cardiac activity. My doctor has prescribed me these medicines- Estradiol valerate, Progesterone, Dydrogestro, ecospirin, Folera HCG-5000 once in a week. Is it safe to take these medicines during pregnancy?
A:There is no requirement for Oestrogen and progesterone capsules; please stop them - they have risk of fetal problems. Folic acid and HCG injections are ok. The ecospirin too can be taken but after getting tested for anti-cardiolipin and anti-phospholipid antibodies in the blood. If these are increased, then ecosprin in low dose of 75 mg is required. This can be started after testing and taken up to 16 weeks, as also the Inj HCG.
