Is it safe to take Depsonil during pregnancy?

Q: My wife delivered on April 2008. She is taking depsonil since February 2008. It is suggested by a psychiatrist when she was hospitalised due to vomiting. How safe is to take depsonil during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

A:Depsonil is the brand name of an anti-depressant drug called imipramine. It is not indicated for vomiting. Apparently the drug was not given for vomiting but some other cause related to depression. It is not recommended during lactation since it reaches the mother's milk and the infant is being breastfed. It should also not be given during pregnancy for the same reason since it crosses the placenta and reaches the foetus.
