Is it common to have different powers in both the eyes?

Q: The power in my left eye is -2.0 and that in my right eye is -3.75. Is the difference in the powers of both the eyes a cause for concern? I have been using spectacles for the last 10 years and the gap between the powers in both my eyes has been gradually widening. In fact, over the last year, the power of my left eye has decreased from 2.75 to 2.0 while that of the right eye has increased from 3 to 3.75. Are there some special precautions that I should take considering the present condition?

A:A difference in the refractive power in the two eyes is not unusual, and also not a cause for concern. In fact, many people have different powers in the 2 eyes. Regarding the changing refraction in the two eyes, an expert evaluation & opinion by an ophthalmologist is recommended. Some times, the power may be over prescribed, and a subsequent reassessment shows a lower power (fallacious reduction in power of glasses) which cannot be ruled out in this case too.
