Is corneal transplantation possible?

Q: My daughter is just one year and three months old and has a problem of corneal opacity in her left eye since birth. Her cornea is going to be transplanted but due to unavailability we haven't got it done. Please inform us the adverse effects of late transplantation of the cornea. Will this lead to any problem with the retina?

A:You need to find out what is the cause of opacity. Is there any other problem along with this? You can get cornea grafting done till the age of 5 years or even later. The vision in the grafted eye will always be lesser. To do grafting on a child and following it up is a very specialised job. Corneas are available much easily now-a-days, thanks to the increased awareness and many donors.
