I am a diabetic, can I conceive?

Q: I am a 28 years old lady who has been suffering from diabetes for the last 10 years. I have had my albumin levels tested twice in the last 4 years. In the first test it was high and in the second test it was normal as I am taking Hopace 2.5 mg and diet with less protein. I am getting married soon. Can I plan a pregnancy?

A:Yes, you can plan a pregnancy, but make sure that your sugars and HBA1C levels are normal during the pregnancy. Also you will need regular antenatal check ups for sugar control, change of medication, diet control (diabetic diet). The pregnancy will need to be followed up with serial ultrasound scans as well to check for abnormalities in the baby, and development of complications like big baby size and excessive fluid. The chance of problems during labour are also increased and to prevent all those, the sugars need to be well controlled through out the pregnancy.
