Q: My daughter suffered from infection of the submandibular gland and calculi (stones) in the duct. The gland was removed. I want to know the reason for this condition, chances of recurrence and the preventive method to avoid recurrence.

A:You have not said how old your daughter is. Submandibular gland is the commonest salivary gland to develop problems because of its anti-gravity drainage. Now that one of the glands is removed, the problem is solved. Recurrence is unlikely. The chances can be minimised with good oral hygiene. Rinsing the mouth with water after eating and brushing after meals is advised.
