How to manage rubella infection during pregnancy?
Q: My wife is 14 weeks pregnant and has been diagnosed to be suffering from as rubella. Presently she has no problem. She was diagnosed to be hypothyroid at 8 weeks - TSH: 8.63 (Normal: 0.25-5); T4: 15 (Normal: 12-20). She was treated and the test repeated at 10 weeks showed normal values - TSH 1.5; T4 16. What are the chances of the child being affected and what could be the effects?
A:Active rubella infection in early pregnancy, backed by the evidence of serocoversion, would need looking into and might need a cordocentesis to rule out fetal infection. If thyroxine is given then she should be ok from that point of view.
