How to manage infertility in diabetics?
Q: I am 34 yrs old. I am suffering from diabetes and use insulin twice a day after consulting doctors. I do not have children Presently I work in the Gulf but soon will be returning. My question is: will I face problems in having children?
A:You have not mentioned whether you are a man or a woman, how long you have been taking insulin, how good your blood sugar (BS) control is (ie what your BS and glycosylated hemoglobin or HbA1c levels are), and what your general health is like (eg weight, BP, complications), etc. It is therefore difficult to say anything specifically about you. In very general terms: Women with diabetes need to have very tight control, with regular (daily) home BS testing when they are planning a pregnancy and throughout the pregnancy. If their general health and BS control are good and periods are regular, they usually do not have much trouble getting pregnant. Men with diabetes should also not have problems getting a baby if they have good BS control, good erections and no chronic complications of diabetes.
