How safe is the drug Glibenclamide (Daonil)?

Q: I am an 80 years old diabetic patient and use Daonil 2 tablets daily. Please let me know if there are any side effects of taking this medicine for a long time.

A:Daonil is the brand name of a drug called Glibenclamide. I presume you are taking two tablets of 5 mg each daily. If your blood sugar level is well controlled, please continue the medication. We do not recommend a change unless the blood sugar is not controlled. Even then, the maximum dose of Glibenclamide (Daonil) that should be tried is 3 tablets of 5 mg each. It is a good medicine, well tried and tested over decades. There are no unacceptable side effects over long-term use.
