How can I increase my breast milk production?
Q: I am a 31 years old nursing woman but the breast milk supply is very low, so I have to use breast pump machine in order to produce more. The most I can get is 2 ounces of milk every 4 hours, but the baby needs 4 ounces at every feed. I have been taking herbal supplements like fenugreek, blessed thistle, etc. to help produce more milk. The doctor gave me Reglan (which made my milk supply even lower). Is there any other medication I can take to help increase milk supply? I am also giving the formula milk to the baby but I really want him to take only breast milk. Is there any medication available for this?
A:The best way to increase your breast milk supply is to eat high calorie dense foods and to breastfeed as often as your baby will. The more the baby suckles, the more the adaptation to produce breast milk. Please decrease the formula feeds, as this will automatically decrease the supply of breast milk.
