How can I handle my daughter's reading problems?

Q: My 7 years old daughter is studying in 1st standard. She doesn't remember anything that she studies. She reads and writes spellings in the morning about 10 to 20 times but by the evening she forgets it all. How do I manage this situation? Please advise.

A:Does she enjoy going to school? Does she have friends? Does she talk about what happened in school? Does she understand her homework or do it mechanically? What does her class teacher say? All these questions would have to be answered before a view can be given if the child is performing at her age level or is a little behind. Why don't you give her story books to read and music to listen to? You may be able to find out if she remembers what she enjoys and likes. Ask the child directly what she likes to do and why she is finding her assigned work so boring. Parental interest and interaction will change her attitudes.
