How can I get rid of insomnia and depression?
Q: I am suffering from chronic insomnia, mild depression and anxiety neurosis for the last 6 years. I have consulted a clinical psychiatrist and on his advice I started using Zolfresh-10 mg tablets for sleep followed by Prothdiane 75 mg. I have become dependent on Zolfresh and without taking 4 - 5 tablets a day I am unable to sleep well. My psychiatrist is unable to help me. Kindly suggest me some medicine, which can help me come out of this situation and at the same time induce good sleep. I am a 46 years old man and have no hypertension; diabetes and any other known ailments except sleep disorder and anxiety neurosis.
A:Insomnia is common in mild depression and anxiety disorders. In such cases if it has been chronic treating both the conditions probably is beneficial, however, the main focus should be in treating the mild depression and/or anxiety. You seem to be on one antidepressant. There are several other antidepressants/anti anxiety medications, which may benefit. If a single medication is not helpful we often use 2 medications/combination strategy to treat. I suggest that you see another psychiatrist for a second opinion in this regard.
