How can constipation be treated during pregnancy?
Q: My 35 years old wife is 16 weeks pregnant. She is suffering from severe constipation. She takes Isabgol for the same but this doesn’t help much. Her appetite and general health is also getting adversely affected. She is having normal diet with some vitamin and mineral supplements as suggested by the doctor. Is exerting pressure for relieving oneself at this juncture will be harmful? Please advise.
A:I note that your wife is 16 weeks pregnant, and is suffering from constipation. My advice would be: - 1. Drink plenty of fluids & take a high fibre diet. 2. Get examined by your doctor to make sure that you do not have any local problems such as anal fissures or piles. 3. Usually Isapgol is good for relieving constipation. If it does not work, then you can take Lactulose Syrup (Duphalac) 20 - 30 ml at bedtime.
