How can coloboma of iris be managed?
Q: My 4 years old son suddenly started giving too much emphasis to his right eye. He watches television with right eye. The doctor told us that he has coloboma of iris and said there is no treatment for this. However, he advised us to visit again after a month and has not given any medicine. If there is no treatment for this problem, what can we do to help our child? What are the precautions we should to take?
A:Coloboma of iris is a defect of iris since birth and if it does not extend to the back of the eye it will not affect his vision. It is just a cosmetic blemish. It cannot be treated as treatment can be more harmful than the defect. Make sure his vision is ok and he does not need glasses. Otherwise there is no need for a follow up appointment.
