Does my daughter require LASER surgery?
Q: My daughter is 4 years old and has congenital cataract, which was operated when she was 8 weeks old. I want to know if there are any IOLs available, which have no adverse reactions like develop layer complications. Is LASER surgery required?
A:All the IOLs presently available do not have any reaction however children's eyes are small and they will grow with age so power calculations may be unpredictable. If she has not developed thickening of the capsule by now, which requires LASER, then she will not require it later either. In people who have cataract surgery and IOL implantation at the same time, which is usually the case, about 10% of these may require LASER because capsule can become thick and slightly opaque.
