Does a pregnant woman need to take any precautions if someone in the family has chicken pox?
Q: I am 34 weeks pregnant. I had chickenpox 20 years ago but I had only a few boils and my parents are not sure whether it was chickenpox. Now my brother who stays with me has chickenpox. Am I at risk now? Do I need to take any precautions? This is my second pregnancy, my first pregnancy was terminated in the 25th week due to hernia and shortened right arm of the fetus.
A:Chicken pox generally has life long immunity and there is no fear of re-infection. However, at this stage even if you contact the infection your baby will suffer no harm in terms of abnormality so I think you can take the fear off your mind and look after your brother.
