Do I still have vaginal infection?

Q: I am a working woman and I have completed 7 months of pregnancy but since the last month I am feeling pain in my vagina. It appears to be red in colour so my doctor gave Candid v to insert for 5 days. The pain subsided but still it is reddish in colour and sometimes there is pain too. Please advise what medicines should I take, will it harm my baby anyway?

A:It is difficult to prescribe any medicine without actually examining you. You probably still have some vaginal infection. Your obstetrician can examine you again, do a wet smear and probably take some cultures to arrive at the exact diagnosis of the infecting organism. You can then get the appropriate treatment. You husband also needs to be treated simultaneously. You should abstain till both of you are treated. It is important to clear all vaginal infections; otherwise it can predispose to pre term delivery and pre term rupture of bag of waters. If the baby delivers while you are infected, he/she can be infected during passage through the birth canal.
