Do I need a kidney transplant and if yes, where?
Q: I experienced sudden onset of swelling in my feet and neck pain and found to have increased TSH and increased urea and creatinine. Serum protein electrophoresis revealed presence of protein (++) and blood (+). Kidney biopsy showed morphological changes predominantly with evidence of chronic tubulo-interstitial pathology and glomerular changes consistent with nephrosclerosis. The tubules are dilated and contain protein cast. I was recommended to have a kidney transplantation. Do you think it is prudent? If so, can you suggest where can it be done in India?
A:Kidney transplantation is the best option of treatment for kidney failure. Kidney transplantation is governed by transplantation of human organs act and requires a compatible blood group donor from the family like parents, siblings, children & spouse (18 yrs - 65 yrs of age) to donate a kidney to you. The following centres have an active kidney transplant programme in India. 1) PGIMER, Chandigarh 2) Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi 3) AIIMS, New Delhi 4) SGRH - New Delhi 5) SGPGIMS, Lucknow 6) CMC Vellore, Tamil Nadu
