Do I have diabetes?
Q: I am 58 years old. I am not diabetic but I recently got my blood glucose tests done. My fasting blood sugar is 150 mg% and blood sugar PP is 145 mg%. My serum creatinine is 0.9 mg/dl. Do my test results indicate that I am diabetic and need to take medication? What is the status of my kidney function? Do I need to go for some other tests as well?
A:If fasting blood sugar on two different days is more than 126 mg%, then one is considered diabetic. You may repeat your blood sugar after a week. If it shows a similar pattern of blood sugar, then you need treatment, which does not necessarily mean taking drugs. Lifestyle modification is the primary and important line of treatment. If it fails, then drugs are required. At present your kidneys are normal.
