Children - hepatitis

Q: My daughter who is seven years old is passing yellow urine and her eyes also have a tinge of yellow. I observe a decline in appetite although she is generally a fussy eater. Could it be jaundice? I have put her through the usual immunisation programme (including Hepatitis B). Please advise.

A:Your 7 year old daughter may have Infective Hepatitis, probably Hepatitis A. You could confirm the Hepatitis by getting an SGOT, SGPT, Bilirubin and an IgM to HAV done by the laboratory. The treatment for Hepatitis A is generally supportive only, in terms of rest at home, starchy foods and avoiding fatty foods for 15 days and giving Vitamin supplements and pain relievers like Paracetamol. These children do not have any long term consequences of their jaundice.
