Can very high eye power be eliminated through Lasik?

Q: I am 20 years old. I have short eyesight since birth. When I was 7 years old, my left eye was 0.75 and my right eye was -7 with cylindrical power of 4. The doctor asked me to do some exercises with the help of a machine and within a year my right eye power decreased to -5 with cylindrical power of 3 and my left eye to 0.25. Then the doctor recommended semi-soft contact lenses. But with increasing age, my power started to increase. Few months back, I decided to have LASIK and visited a Lasik surgeon. Then my power was -13 with cylindrical power of 5 in my right eye and 1.25 in my left eye. The surgeon said that my right eye power was too high, which cannot be eliminated but it can be reduced to -3 to -4 with 2 cylindrical power. If I am not satisfied then I should wait for 2 to 3 years as by that time more equipment will be invented to eliminate the power. He recommended toric lenses which are comfortable. Can my right eye gain normal vision? Are some equipment to be invented in near future to eliminate eye powers? How much time will it take?

A:Inspite of the proposed Lasik treatment your vision may not return to normal. In view of dissimilar lens power you will also have a lazy (amblyopic) eye. More over no body can guarantee you normal vision either now nor in the near future to get rid of your glasses or contact lenses. You may notice that most of these Lasik surgeons wear glasses themselves. A few years after so called successful Lasik surgery, the lens power may revert back towards original defect.
