Can painkillers be taken safely during periods?

Q: My wife has endometriosis. She gets severe pain during her periods. She conceived and aborted (IUGR) last year. She takes Ultracet and Dolosafe during periods. Are these safe? Will they affect her next pregnancy?

A:Ultracet is a combination product that contains two drugs: tramadol and paracetamol. Tramadol is a potent opioid (like opium) agent that can cause dependence. It must not be used repeatedly and/or for long periods. Its use during pregnancy is prohibited. The period pain is of spasmodic nature and hence it is more useful to given a pain killer with antispasmodic properties such as Parvon-Spas (1 cap. 2-3 times daily).
