Can I have a normal delivery?
Q: I am a 36 weeks pregnant woman and my baby is in breech position. I am taking Duvadilan for the last two months as per the doctor’s advice. My baby sometimes goes in transverse position and sometimes in breech. The doctor says that it is because I have succenturiate placenta and therefore I have to go for c-section. Can’t I have a normal delivery? Please advise.
A:In your case it is indeed safer to have a caesarean section, for both the mother and baby as there can be several problems at the time of delivery, which can compromise the health like prolonged and disordered labour, uterine rupture, post delivery haemorrhage, birth injuries to the baby and a trapped head with consequences like cerebral palsy, mental retardation and low IQ, in the baby.
There should be no cause for worry as c-sections are very safe today with good operating facility, blood banks, antibiotics, safe anaesthesia and excellent painkillers available. Patients in >95% cases go home by the third post operation day.
