Can I continue Neomarcazole during pregnancy?

Q: I am 30 years old woman, married with one child. I have been suffering from hyperthyroidism since 5-1/2 years. Initially, I took treatment for two years. Later the thyroid levels came to normal and I stopped the medication. After eight months, my thyroid problem relapsed and I consulted the same doctor and he advised me to take Neomercozole. Now I have stopped taking the tablets as my thyroid levels are not too high but around normal range. The doctor has suggested me to take radioactive iodine treatment (RAI) for permanent cure. I also want to go for another child. Can I continue my thyroid medication if I plan to get pregnant? And how

A:I think you should keep monitoring your thyroid levels every three months and if they are in normal range, do not take Neomarcazole but in case there are signs of hyperthyroidism again, start Propylthiouracil (PTU) which is a similar drug to Neomarcazole but is absolutely safe to use during pregnancy. With this drug you will be able to go ahead with the pregnancy without much problems. RAI therapy as has been advised is a good option, only if given by expert hand and even if there is mild deficiency after this, it can be treated more safely and easily with thyroid hormone replacement.
