Can I conceive with contracted tubes?

Q: I am a 29 years old female. I had my hysterosalpingography (HSG) done and the report is as follows: Both fallopian tubes are well visualised. The mucosal pattern of both tubes is altered. Normal size and shape of the uterus. Free spill of contrast in the peritoneal cavity is seen on both sides. There is no filling defect in the uterus. My doctor has told me that my tubes are contracted. Can I conceive with contracted tubes?

A:Your tubes are OK - you need to be checked for other causes of not conceiving like - egg formation failure or cervical factor/uterine defects/ diseases affecting the uterus - infections or semen disorders - the treatment depends on cause found. In some 30-40% there may be no cause found in which case stress may be a factor. If it is unexplained infertility or endometriosis/ blocked tubes - IVF is the answer. If it is simple semen defects - treatment with prepared semen can be done - after treating any possible infections. Treatment of egg formation failure is simple with medicines to achieve egg formation and timing the coitus with that.
