Can a diabetic female conceive?

Q: I am a juvenile diabetic girl since the last 5 years and I am on insulin since then. My parents too are diabetic. My question is whether there is any problem in conceiving under such conditions? My doctors are of different opinions and are not giving even 60 percent chances of safe delivery and the after effects on the child. Can you guide me about this problem? I am very much interested in having child of my own.

A:Diabetic women can certainly have children of their own, but you have to be very tightly controlled right from the period when you are trying to conceive till the end of pregnancy. That means that throughout this period you will need 3-6 blood tests daily, and adjusting insulin doses accordingly, so that you remain in the 80-120 mg/dl range as far as possible.
