Birth control

Q: We are blessed with a girl child two months back. For birth control we consulted the gynaecologist who said the usage of Copper T is infectious and is not advisable. Instead the doctor has recommended an Injection Depo Provera to be used once in 3 months. Is it safe for my wife to use this injection one in 3 months and will it have any affect on the lactation as the baby is only breast fed now?

A:Intra Uterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCD) - Copper T is one (older device) of these - are not infectious if applied with proper technique in selected patients. Other IUCDs like Multiload, Monolisa, Marina are also available in the market.
Depo Provera can cause irregular periods. It may cause lactation problems in some users. Any contraceptive has to be chosen for medical suitability, keeping in mind the users preferences and needs. The plus and minus points of different contraceptives should be fully discussed with your gyneacologist before you choose one.
