Dr Satish Jain is the Director, Indian Epilepsy Center, Senior Consultant & Head of Neurology, FORTIS Hospitals, and former professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He was also a Senior Consultant and In-charge Epileptology at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He has published 164 papers and contributed 61 chapters in books/periodicals and edited 7 books.

Important Academic Honours / Awards:
  • 1993-94: Awarded the William G Lennox International Clinical Research Fellowship of the Epilepsy Foundation of America to work at Duke Center for the Advanced Study of Epilepsy, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, USA.
  • 1993-94: Fulbright Scholar of the Council of International Exchange of Scholars, USA.
  • 1996: Awarded the Duke Epilepsy Research Professorship by Duke Center for the Advanced Study of Epilepsy, Duke University, NC, USA.
  • 1999: Nominated to the Commission on Search for Epilepsy Genes of the International League against Epilepsy.
  • 1999: Young Scientist Millennium Award - 2000 for Biological Sciences of The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).
  • 2000: Nominated as the Nodal Resource Person from India and Asia for the ILAE-IBE-WHO sponsored Global Campaign Against Epilepsy
  • 2001: International Ambassador of Epilepsy Award of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE).
  • 2001: Nominated to the Commission for Asian and Oceanian Affairs of the International League against Epilepsy.
  • 2002: Took premature retirement as Professor and In-charge Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Programme, Department of Neurology, Neurosciences Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi -110029, India
  • 2002: Elected Secretary General of the Indian Epilepsy Society
  • 2003: Social Service Eminence Award (Samaj Seva Pratibha Samman) of the Vardhman Sahyog Samiti for outstanding contribution towards Social Service through Medical Care.

    Significant Contributions to Medicine:
    1. Described the “Disease Expression of JME in Indian Population" which represents one of the largest collection of systematically studied family data in relation to JME.
    2. The preliminary results of the collaborative project on “Linkage Analysis of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) and other Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsies (IGEs)” point to “multiple loci” for the genetic predisposition to JME.
    3. Described the “Occurrence of epilepsies in family members of Indian probands with different epileptic syndromes.”
    4. Actively involved with the WHO-ILAE-IBE Global Campaign against Epilepsy.
    5. Initiated research related to “Epilepsy and Twinning” using a novel methodology and reported that twinning is not a risk factor for epilepsy in Indian population.
    6. Investigated more than 130 families with Spino-Cerebellar Ataxias (SCA) and provided the first phenotypic description in Indian families of genotypically confirmed SCA-12.
