Dr. Medapalli is a physician-scientist in the field of Nephrology. He was born in India and completed his medical schooling from B. M. Patil Medical College and Research Center in Bijapur, Karnataka. Dr. Medapalli moved to the United States in 2001 after he was accepted into the prestigious Masters program at University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Public Health. While at UNC, Dr. Medapalli also worked as a researcher in the UNC Hospitals Division of Gastroenterology. He studied the impact of dialysis on survival after liver transplantation, outcomes in Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy (a rare genetic disorder) after liver transplantation and risk perception in Barrett's Esophagus (a precursor to oesophageal cancer). Dr. Medapalli's research at UNC led to publications in top-tier journals such as American Journal of Transplantation and Gastroenterology.
After obtaining his MPH degree from UNC, Dr. Medapalli specialized in Internal Medicine at University of Oklahoma College of Medicine at Tulsa and was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 2008. Dr. Medapalli is currently a Nephrology Fellow at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City which is one of top-ranked hospitals in the US for kidney care and a national leader in research on kidney diseases. At Mount Sinai, Dr. Medapalli not only provides world class care to patients, but is also involved in ground breaking research. He is the lead investigator of a clinical study looking at progression of kidney disease in more than 80,000 US Veterans with diabetes and HIV. Dr. Medapalli also serves as a key investigator on several other research studies at Mount Sinai which are examining kidney toxicity of Tenofovir (a commonly used HIV medication), follow-up in living kidney donors and effect of whole grain rich diet in preventing diabetes.
Dr. Medapalli's clinical prowess and expertise in research have been recognised with several honours and awards. He received the first and the second prizes in the research competition at the 2005 and 2006 American College of Physicians (ACP) Oklahoma Chapter Annual Scientific Meetings respectively. He was also a National Finalist in the ACP Associate Research Abstracts Competition in 2006. In 2008, his excellent clinical skills were recognised by the University Of Oklahoma College Of Medicine by conferring him with the Antonio C. de Leon, Jr., M.D. Award of Excellence in Clinical Examination. And, in recognition of his expertise in research methodology, Dr. Medapalli has been asked to serve as a reviewer for the several scientific journals in the field of nephrology including Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation, Annals of Transplantation and International Journal of Nephrology.
Dr. Medapalli is also a dedicated educator. He has served as a preceptor in physiology to first year medical students at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He takes pride and enjoys mentoring medical students and residents who rotate with him on the Nephrology service. He has authored invited expert review articles in journals such as “Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension” and “Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy”. He is also the founder and the Editor-in-Chief of ‘Nephrology Online’ (http://nephrologyonline.blogspot.com/), which serves as an online educational resource and a forum to discuss clinical concepts and scientific papers for nephrologists.
Dr. Medapalli is also an active member of several prestigious professional societies including American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Transplantation, National Kidney Foundation and Renal Physicians Association.
