Graduated from the University of Bombay (MBBS) with a Distinction in Medicine and several other subjects in 1953. MD from the University of Bombay in 1956. Awarded a Distinction and Gold Medals. The youngest Indian to be so elected. Trained at the Brompton Hospital and Middlesex Hospital, London and was on the house staff of City Hospital and Northern General Hospital, Edinburgh, in Professor John Crofton's Unit.

Consultant in charge of the ICU at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai since 1964. Consultant Physician to the Parsee General Hospital, Mumbai since 1960.
Pioneered Critical Care (in particular Intensive Respiratory Care) in India. Published over 50 papers, particularly in relation to respiratory medicine, tropical eosinophilia, respiratory care, tetanus and rabies. Contributed a chapter on Tetanus in the current Oxford Textbook of Medicine as also in the forthcoming edition. Invited to deliver many prestigious orations and lectures at various universities both in this country and abroad.
Research: Internationally acclaimed research on tropical eosinophilia, tetanus, respiratory medicine and problems pertaining to critical care in developing countries.

  • Awarded several national prizes, medals and distinctions.
  • On the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Respiratory Medicine.
  • Awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 1987 for outstanding contribution to Medicine in India.
  • On the Scientific Advisory Board of the Indian Council of Medical Research.
  • President of several Academic Meets and Congresses in India including the International Congress on Respiratory Care in 1989.
  • Patron of the World Conference on Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, hosted by the ACCP (western India Chapter) in 1995.
  • Regent for India, American College of Chest Physicians till 1996.
  • Delivered an invitation lecture at a plenary session of Chest 1996, the combined XVIII World Congress on Diseases of the Chest and the 62nd Annual International Scientific Assembly held in San Francisco in 1996.
  • Awarded the Dhanvantari Award by the Dhanvantari Foundation in 1996.
  • Awarded the Master Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 1997 - there are about eight such Master Fellows of the College.
  • Elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1998.
  • Elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2000.
